31 Days to Success: Day 17 The List of Work-At-Home Companies

I get email everyday asking about a list of companies looking for people to work at home usually as typists or data entry specialists. I hate to break it to you, but there is no “list”. At least there is no list that has companies that you can simply sign up and work for them.

There are lists of companies with telecommuting programs, and while this list is a great resource to convince your boss to let you work at home, its not a great resource for finding work. For one thing, just because a company has a telecommuting program, doesn’t mean its hiring. It would be like using your yellow pages to find a job. Sure the companies listed have employees, but they may not be hiring.

There are lists of companies that are frequently accepting applications for freelance or contract workers in areas such as virtual assistance, customer service, tutoring, etc. The Jobs Online Toolkit has such a list with over 300 companies. But again, while these companies take on new workers regularly, you won’t simply sign up and be working. You’ll need to have the skills, experience and possibly the equipment to do the job.

The telecommuting job databases are your best bet for a list of work-at-home jobs. However, if you’re expecting to simply sign up for a job, you’ll be disappointed. And if you’re hoping to type or do data entry, you’ll probably be disappointed as well. Telecommuting data bases do have current job openings, but these jobs require skills and experience. You’ll need to compete against others to get the job.

The key thing to remember is that you won’t sign up for a job and any one who says you can, is selling you something and it ain’t a job.
